Te de Mouse - Black Muffin IPA by Juguetes Perdidos and Cerveza Mur

Updated: Jul 5, 2023

The name is a mouthful, but this collaboration between Cerveza Mur and Juguetes Perdidos is also a mouthful but in a good way. There is so much happening ingredients-wise you would expect this to be difficult to pull off, but these two brewers did a great job of making a well-balanced, complex, black IPA that is close to a dessert beer but manages not to overdo it on the sweet side.

They use three hops, Citra, Simcoe, and Mosaic.

When I take in the aroma, I get some fruit, probably from the Citra hops, but it’s mostly cinnamon, cacao, and vanilla. They also added lactose, malts, oatmeal, and maltodextrin for good measure to end up with a full-bodied beer. This beer is smooth going down.

If you don’t know what maltodextrin is, don’t worry, neither did I, and I was in the food industry; we just never used it in our products. It’s safe. It’s used as a thickening agent. Maltodextrin is a white powder made from corn, rice, potato starch, or wheat. The hops they used are trendy, and seeing them on the label, I thought this was going to be a very tropical, fruity, and dry beer. Still, as I said, they managed to balance it all out to get a very well balanced dry beer with just enough of each ingredient.

Unfortunately, this has become one of my favorite beers. It is unfortunate only because it’s a collaboration, limited-production beer, so I am going to enjoy the hell out of my two cans that I bought. By the time I finished my first can, I had understood the name they had given it. You will have to take my word for it unless you find it around somewhere.

If you make it to Argentina and you want to take a craft-beer tour with me so we can chat about beer over some beer, then make sure to look us up here: Craft Beer Adventure.
